    We believe that every child can achieve success in mathematics. We aim to nurture confident, curious and resilient mathematicians who develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and enjoy the challenge of solving problems.

    Our mathematics curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils:
    • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied practice and secure conceptual understanding.
    • Reason mathematically by explaining, justifying and proving their thinking using precise mathematical language.
    • Solve problems by applying their knowledge to a range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts with confidence and perseverance.

    We are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all pupils can thrive. Strong mathematical foundations are established in the Early Years and carefully built upon throughout each stage of learning, enabling every child to experience success and make sustained progress.

    Through a mastery approach, pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts before moving on to new learning. We encourage children to make connections across different areas of mathematics, helping them to see the subject as coherent, interconnected and meaningful.

    Mathematical language is at the heart of our teaching. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their reasoning and engage in purposeful discussion, developing confidence as independent and reflective learners.

    As part of our caring school community, we promote resilience, determination and positive risk-taking. We want pupils to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and recognise that effort and perseverance are key to success.

    Ultimately, we aim for all pupils to leave Clifton-upon-Teme Primary School as confident mathematicians who can apply their knowledge and skills effectively in everyday life.

    How is our curriculum delivered?

    Our mathematics curriculum is carefully structured and sequenced to develop secure understanding and progressive mastery of key concepts. Learning is broken down into small, manageable steps, allowing pupils to build upon prior knowledge and develop confidence in new learning.

    Each lesson begins with a retrieval or reactivation task, enabling pupils to revisit previous learning, strengthen retention and make meaningful connections between concepts.

    Fluency, reasoning and problem-solving are at the core of our mathematics curriculum and are embedded throughout all areas of learning.

    We use a Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, allowing pupils to explore concepts through practical resources and visual representations before moving towards abstract understanding.

    Teachers use explicit modelling, guided practice and carefully structured questioning to develop understanding and encourage mathematical thinking.

    Assessment for learning is integral to teaching. Ongoing assessment enables teachers to adapt learning, address misconceptions promptly and provide appropriate support and challenge.

    Consistent approaches across the school help pupils develop confidence, independence and resilience.
