We believe that learning a modern foreign language enriches pupils’ understanding of the world and broadens their cultural awareness. Our chosen modern foreign language is French.

We aim to foster a curiosity and enthusiasm for language learning, enabling pupils to develop confidence in communicating with others and an appreciation of different cultures and traditions. Through engaging and inclusive lessons, pupils are encouraged to enjoy learning a new language and to recognise the value of language skills in an increasingly interconnected world.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils make sustained progress in French, developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills alongside an understanding of grammar and vocabulary. We aim to provide pupils with secure foundations for continued language learning at Key Stage 3 while promoting resilience, confidence and a willingness to take risks in communication.

How is the curriculum delivered?

French is taught from Year 3 to Year 6 through the Kapow Primary Languages Scheme. The carefully sequenced curriculum enables pupils to build knowledge and skills progressively over time through engaging and meaningful topics.

Lessons are designed to be interactive and engaging, providing opportunities for pupils to practise and apply their language skills regularly. Children learn key vocabulary and phrases through songs, games, stories, conversation, repetition and practical activities, helping them to develop confidence and fluency in French.

The curriculum promotes an understanding and appreciation of French-speaking countries and cultures, encouraging pupils to make connections between languages and deepen their understanding of the wider world. Regular opportunities for retrieval and revisiting prior learning help pupils retain knowledge and build on their understanding as they progress through the school.
