At Clifton, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being to all of our pupils. We believe that a continued innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities has a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of every single learner in our school. Our Primary School PE and Sport Funding will enable us to extend our provision through using the skills of additional sports professionals, entering into a wide variety of competitive sports events and training staff to deliver high-quality PE sessions across the school.
What is the Sports Premium?
The P.E and Sport Premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the P.E and sport activities they offer their pupils. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Schools are to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
What is the vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium?
All pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
Key Indicators of success:
the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
Clifton has always been a school that understands the importance of P.E and Sport to our learners and we strive to ensure our pupils experience a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities.
All children are involved in competitive sports as part of P.E lessons, extra-curricular clubs, cluster tournaments as well as Intra-House sports competitions that occur at least once every half-term. For our most able sporting pupils, we encourage them to compete in district events in school time in order for them to be able to showcase their talents and compete against others working at the same level.
Clifton is also an integral part of The Chantry School Primary Schools Sports Partnership. This cluster of schools has a very clear vision for P.E and Sport which involves increasing the opportunities for competitive sports for all pupils as well as aiming to increase the training opportunities for all staff working within the cluster of schools.
The cluster action plan is focuses on maintaining the strong sports cluster already in place as well as working together to promote sport and healthy lifestyles to those children in the cluster who are less active.

We will look at how well we use our Sport Premium to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sporting provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.
Measuring the impact of the activities provided with sports premium funding can be achieved in different ways. We will look at progress in PE as well as other areas of development such as self-esteem, confidence and the numbers of pupils involved in sporting activities in and out of school. Assessments are made both formally and informally using our school assessment systems as well as feedback from staff and visitors to the school. We will also evaluate the impact of professional development opportunities in improving teaching and learning in PE.
Swimming is an important skill and can encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. All Local Authority schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
The programme of study for PE sets out the expectation that pupils should be taught to:
swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 meters
use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
At Clifton, all pupils from Years 1 to 6 undertake a set of swimming lessons of the course of 10 weeks. Eagles class go in the Autumn Term; Woodpeckers go in the Spring Term and Robins class go in the Summer Term. All swimming sessions are located at Lower Wick Swimming Pool.
All children are continuously assessed in order to track their progress and grouped accordingly. For those children who have met the required standard of 25m, a course in life-saving and water safety is delivered to enhance their existing skills.

At Clifton we want all children to be proficient swimmers by the time they transition to secondary school.
The Government expect as a minimum that children will swim for 25 hours throughout their primary schooling. At Clifton children start swimming when they are in Year 1, and will swim for ten 30 minute sessions each year until the end of Year 6, adding up to 35 hours in total.
Our aim of for all children to reach STAGE 6 on the Swim England Learn to Swim programme (see below) by the time they leave the school at the end of Year 6. Eagles Class swim in the Autumn Term; Woodpeckers Class swim in the spring and Robins Class in the summer . All swimming lessons take place at Lower Wick Swimming Pool in Worcester. In the sessions, children are grouped into three groups depending on their current swimming stage. Swimming instructors at the swimming pool take two of the groups and the class teachers take the final group.

From 2022, all swimming is taught and assessed in line with the Swim England Learn to Swim programme. This is also the scheme which children also work towards in the swimming lessons they undertake outside of school.
